More good news for Peterborough residents came on Friday 25th March, as the City Council announced the imminent construction of a brand-new City Market.
The existing City Market building, which has been in use for decades, is set to be demolished this year to make way for over 300 new houses.
In preparation, existing traders have either been temporarily relocated or have taken an eight-week hiatus, though Food Hall traders will continue to operate as normal.
It’s hoped that the brand-new facility on Bridge Street – a high-footfall area of the city – will open this summer, and the Council says it plans to mark the occasion with a special event.
A date in June has been earmarked for the opening, though no plans have been set in stone just yet.
The City Council says that the new facility will be ‘refreshed and revitalised.’ Wooden kiosks will be installed beneath trees on Bridge Street, where the likes of fruit and vegetables, clothing, coffee and more will be sold.
Alongside those kiosks will be a Food Hall, housing a fishmonger and two butchers.
Councillor Steve Allen, cabinet member for housing, culture and communities at Peterborough City Council, said: “We are planning to open the new market this summer and want to mark the occasion with a special event that guarantees a celebratory and buzzing atmosphere.
“We hope to make an announcement regarding the opening date soon.
“We’re confident that the new market will have a busy summer of trading. People are returning to offices and shops in the city centre and getting ready for an exciting summer full of events and activities.
“This is the right place and the right time for our City Market to thrive.”
