If you’re thinking about placing your belongings into storage, the process is not dissimilar to moving house. From packing and labelling boxes to disassembling and arranging furniture, we’re revealing how to organise a storage unit in 5 easy steps.

  • Create an inventory and clearly label boxes

When it comes to your belongings, you’ll want to know what’s in storage and what’s not. That’s why it’s recommended that you create an inventory.

If you’ve got a lot of items, your approach may be a little different. After all, listing every item from a 6-bed house would not only be impractical, but also take an excruciating amount of time to complete.

Instead, it’s recommended that you list all your boxes with a generic summary of the contents.

  • Disassemble furniture

Disassembling your furniture will not only help you maximise space in your storage unit, it should also give your items better protection from damage. Larger pieces should typically be placed at the bottom of your unit and towards the back.

  • Prepare your unit according to the season

If you’re storing in the winter months, it’s worth putting a layer of cardboard, a sheet or wooden pallets on the floor of your unit to place a suitable barrier between the cold ground and your belongings.

  • Arrange your storage unit strategically

When your items arrive at your storage unit, a porter should be able to transport your boxes, furniture and equipment to your unit. If you’re planning to access some items regularly, it’s best to palace these at the front or somewhere that is easily accessible.

Make sure your boxes are not stacked too high and that everything is securely placed. Make sure electrical equipment is placed in secure plastic bags or boxes.

  • Cover furniture and equipment in dust sheets

Once you’ve found a home for everything, placing a cover over your furniture, equipment or exposed items will help keep them clean and dust-free. It will certainly save you dusting everything at a later date!
